South eastern part of Sweden. The name derives from its location 'east of the route' (ancient route from Ystad, heading north-east).
Österlen has been called Sweden’s Tuscany with its rolling hills and open landscape. The area has been attracting artists for at least two centuries and today has a large colony of artists. It is often said that artists are attracted to the special light of Österlen, especially by the sea.
