I got to know Mikael, his mother Barbro and uncle Leif many years ago and was allowed into their home and their everyday existence. The images portray moments in their lives; These moments that at first seem harsh and unforgiving, at the same time invite us to explore characters’ inner strengths, love and compassion, struggles and dependence, rejection and acceptance of their addiction.

The images intimately communicate the characters’ moods, vulnerability and psychology hidden beneath the surface of their appearance.

I had a strong connection to this family and an earnest desire to learn more about their lives. What emerges from these images, I think, is courage and strength to resist a painful reality dominated by demons and obsession.
